During the EPP Political Assembly meeting of 3-4 June 2025 in Brussels, its members discussed the most recent developments in Georgia.
They stated that Georgia is facing a dangerous wave of democratic backsliding, marked by the government’s systematic persecution of political opponents, stifling of dissent, and aggressive crackdowns on civil society and independent media.
The adoption of draconian laws - such as the repressive "foreign influence" legislation - mirrors authoritarian tactics aimed at silencing critics and dismantling democratic freedoms.
These actions not only violate fundamental rights but also jeopardize Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future, undermining its commitments to EU and NATO integration. The Georgian people’s aspirations for democracy must not be sacrificed to authoritarian tendencies.
We call for an immediate reversal of these oppressive measures, the release of all unjustly detained activists and opposition figures, and a renewed commitment to Georgia’s democratic and European path. We demand free and fair early parliamentary elections, allowing Georgian voters to hold the government accountable and restore the country’s democratic trajectory.
The international community must stand firmly with the people of Georgia in their fight for freedom, justice, and a European future.
